Angram Cote Farmstead - The Vayro Ancestry

ANGRAM COTE FARM, ELLINGSTRING, LOWER WENSLEYDALE

Travelling East on the A6106 from Leyburn to Masham and Ripon, you go through East Witton village and past Jervaulx Abbey ruins. If you take the next right, you climb a steep narrow road to the village of Ellingstring and turning left at the top of the bank the first farm buildings on the right is a small farmstead Angram Cote where Vayro ancestors were tenant farmers from 1808 through to 1960.  Over the years of my research I have collected information about Angram Cote Farmstead, as well as Moorcote and Tranmire farms that are only ten minutes walk away, where Vayro families were also living in the 19 th Century.

In tracing the tenants of Angram Cote farmstead, John Hebden from UDFHG provided very early dates for his own ancestors.

1609 May 4 Thomas Hebden administered to his wife Elizabeth,
1662 Feb 24 Henry Hebden's will was read,
1678 Jan 5 Christopher Hebden buried at East Witton.
1685 Apr 27 Dorothy Hebden buried East Witton,
1698 Dec 19 Ann Hebden wife off Henry buried East Witton,
1699 Dec 15 Henry Hebden (cloth-weaver)

The first Jervaulx Estates record I have found is in 1708 when John Croft and John Pickersgill were tenants.  As well as Angram Household and Hill Garth, a paddock is listed with Penny Ash, and various closes including Long, East, Middle, Cote, Lee and Holsworth.  In 1716 the tenant was a Widow Hebden.

Marion Moverley from UDFHG found a list of felons transported to America, 1717-1775 in which was a Robert Plews of Angram Cote. Robert was a thoroughly bad lad and well known in the Masham Courts!  In Oct 1726 he married Alice Pickersgill at Middleham and the same year was transported to the USA. The Pickersgill family lived at Angram Cote from early 1700s through to the 1740s.

1717 Marmaduke Ascough

1776 through to 1792 the names Johnson, Fawbert, Bell, Johnson, Pickard, Raper and Scott appear at the farm, details found in baptism and burial records at East Witton.

1785 August baptism recorded at East Witton for John son of John and Elizabeth Berry of Angram Cote.

1808 to 1816 The first of the Vayro ancestors made an appearance, namely William Vayro (G5) and his wife Esther Lye baptised their son Richard. Their other six children had been born at Tranmire.

1817 to 1833 James Vayro (G4 eldest son of William) and his wife Mary Walker and several children but also appear as late as the 1861 Census

1834/5 until 1850 Richard Vayro (son of William) is the tenant with wife Mary Bussfield

1858 to 1868 Thomas Vayro (son of James) and his wife Elizabeth Croft make an appearance.

1968 until 1893 William Vayro (G3 son of James) and Elizabeth Berry take up residence. William is shown in various post office directories.

1905 until 1929 George Vayro (son of James) and wife Elizabeth Graham

1951 to 1960 the last known Vayro tenant of Angram Cote is George's daughter Louie who married a John William Croft.

1960 a Mr Allison took over.
