WILLIAM VAYRO (1899 – 1959) IN AUSTRALIA
GRANDFATHER of  IAN ROSS VAYRO

The website page “Australian Vayros” goes into much more detail but rather than repeat it all there are some essential points to explain in the life of William Vayro who is the Grandfather of Ian Ross Vayro in Australia.

William’s father was James Vayro the fourth child of William of Jervaulx and Jane Vayro (nee Robinson), born on the 3 rd June 1868 at Abbey Hill, High Jervaulx and baptised at East Witton on 5 th July in the same year.

James moved to Otley near Leeds at some point where he met his first wife Sarah Homes. They were married on 13 th April 1895 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in OTLEY (registered Wharfedale folio 9a page 227). Sarah Holmes was the daughter of a Bookbinder William Holmes and was born in 1870 and apparently died shortly after childbirth with William (born in Otley, 6 July 1899)

Their first children, the twins Jane and Alice Vayro were born at Abbey Hill Cottages in East Witton, on 14 th July 1896, with Jane being named after James’s mother and Alice after his sister Alice Ann. There was a Sarah Vayro who died in 1901 July to September period registered Wharfedale, Folio 9a Page 108 aged 31 at death, which tallies with the info of born 1870.

James was married for a second time, to Francis Fawbert, (parents lived at Angram Cottages in Ellingstring). They are shown to have married in the Bedale Area in 1902 Folio 9d page 1075, and though one of the twins, Alice had died less than one day old, James and Francis had a further two sons George 16 February 1904, and Thomas 1905 and a daughter Minnie 1908 before leaving Wensleydale.

It is well documented that James and Francis left Wensleydale and immigrated to Australia, on the SS Perthshire with their family on 29 th June 1909. They settled in Middle Ridge in Toowoomba, Queensland. Their first boy born in Australia was John (Jack) 17 March 1910, and they had two other sons, Harold 22 May 1913 and Arthur (Toby) 18 May 1916.

James died in Toowoomba on 7 th August 1960 aged 92.

On 9 th July 1917 William joined the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force (Private no 5334), and during the World War One served in France as a stretcher bearer with the Light Horse in Egypt and the Middle East. Due to being gassed which caused him very serious lung problems for the rest of his life, William was discharged from the A I E on medical grounds on 27 th March 1919. He  had been 16 when he enlisted and spent the first 2 years in England training until he was aged 17.

On leaving he went to Millmeran, Queensland to work for Frederick Evans who had served with him in Light Horse Regiment during the war, and William married Fred’s sister Freda Vita Evans, and moved to Tara in September 1921, having bought eleven hundred acres of rough cattle country. In May 1926 he sold their property “Woodlea” and moved back to Millmeran.

William and Freda had five children,
Lawrence William 10 June 1921, Ronald Aubrey Vayro 10 May 1923. (Ian Ross Vayro’s father),Allan James 26 Dec 1928, Marjorie Jean 27 September 1932, Kevin George 01 March 1934 and
William died in the Toowoomba General Hospital, Australia, on 15 th October 1959.

Rather than refer back to another website page it is easier to continue the story here.
Ronald Aubrey Vayro was born in Toowoomba 9 th October 1923. He served in the 8 th Squadron Royal Australian Air Force in World War Two. He married Enid May Boone on 27 th April 1946 and began farming seven hundred acres of land at Jandowae, Queensland. He later moved to Brisbane and started a food-processing factory, and proved to be an astute businessman. He eventually retired to a small farm in Redland Bay, Queensland. Ronald and Enid had four children Graham Neil, Gwenda Lorrelle, Ian Ross Vayro and Brian James
